One Skater's New Years Resolutions

288939_239431272762174_1101810

Dear new Me,

I am going to make 2012 the best year ever with a few New Year's resolutions that I will actually keep this year.

1.) I will get my sh*t together and organize my life.
2.) I SWEAR I will use protection starting NOW.
3.) I will work out more - more crunches, more stairs, more trail skating. MORE MORE MORE!
4.) I will work on my speed.  Stop...Jammer Time.
5.) I will get a better education.
6.) I will try new things.
7.) I will save money.
8.) I will dress to impress.
10.) I will take better care of myself, because if I don't, who will?

Thanks for listening,
The old Me.

Winner of the Weekly FREE SH*T Contest 10/31-11/4

Fangsinmotion

Congratulations to last week's winner of the RollerGirlSkates.com Weekly FREE SH*T CONTEST,
Moloko Violet of Greensboro Roller Derby- Gate City Roller Girls  has won a FREE pair of KP-Pro knee pads, courtesy of Triple 8!

THE CONTEST: "As a vet, what's the one best piece of advice would you give to a Fresh Meat skater?"

THE WINNING ENTRY: Although most of the entries stressed the importance of good knee pads from the moment you start derby (which is AMAZING advice),
we found that Moloko Violet's submission really spoke to us;

"Everyone wants to emphasize the heart of derby: the community, the love, the friendship, and the way this all becomes part of an addiction-- and addiction with a penchant to be dolled up in stretchy-bright-things. It's true, and I miss these things as I sit thousands of miles away from my league, going mad with the desire to be back on 8 wheels and in weird outfits with them... but you'll figure all of that out in no time. It's obvious. As a veteran, I have more important advice:

Treat it like a sport, compete every day, and focus on getting strong.

You like the silly socks? The crazy events? The loud music? Can't wait to paint-up your face and see posters with your clever name all over them? Yeah, me too! But we can only keep this thing going with a hefty dose of true athleticism and real talent. Let's be real: if we are going to keep the crazy clothes and rebel attitude, we are going to have to work harder to show that we play a real sport. And I'm okay with that, because I get to work harder and still wear Blade Runner's Priss' make-up while I play my sport.

They may come to watch bunch of loud fools clumsily galloping around, in minimal clothing, occasionally running into each other. But they won't respect it and they won't come back again and buy your merch. What I and the fans that respect roller derby want to see is a bunch of loud SUPER HEROES (often in minimal clothing) on that track! Get stable, be strong, go faster, and encourage your teammates to do the same. Derby is there for women that have never played sports before in their lives and for women of all sizes, but it is only a matter of time before we're all on the same page: a rolling army of muscle-y awesome. And it's that tougher, healthier you that really pays off. Ask yourself at practice: Would I pick myself to be in the front wall of the final jam?

So that's my line. Don't worry about the tights, the theatrics or the after-party when you're at practice. That totally great stuff just comes naturally.
Sweat first. That's why you came here, anyway, right?"

-Moloko Violet

Thanks, Moloko.  We couldn't have said it better ourselves.

Winner of last week's WEEKLY FREE SH*T Contest!

Congratulations to this week's winner of the RollerGirlSkates.com Weekly FREE SH*T CONTEST!

Bruise Her Blue of the Juneau Roller Girls! She won a FREE set of Radar Tile Biters!

THE CONTEST:
"You talk about it all the time.  You live, breath, think and eat it.
You daydream about it and sneak forbidden peeks of websites about it at work.
Your life has been turned upside down and inside out because of it.
Yeah, we know....you love roller derby, but what RollerGirlSkates.com wants to hear is WHY."

THE WINNING SUBMISSION:
"My whole life I've made up for my short comings with humor. I grew up being the short fat funny girl who made everyone laugh. I joined the volley ball team in high school but never really managed to do much but get hit by the ball instead of hit the ball. I joined softball for our city parks and rec team but always seemed to trip when rounding the bases or strike out at slow pitch...thats right, slow pitch softball. Then, while sitting on my couch watching the movie Whip It I was introduced to a sport I never new exsisted. I was speechless. "Too bad Juneau, AK doesn't have roller derby" I thought to myself.

Fast forward 6 months and I'm watching the Juneau Roller Girls skate past me in our fourth of July parade. I said to myself silently, "I have to do this." So, some months later there I was, standing awkwardly on my Reidell skates with my pads, mouth guard and helmet to cover my giant dome head. All I could think was how I was crazy. I could hardly skate! But one thing that never changed was I knew for the first time ever I had found my sport. I watched the Juneau Roller Girls fly past me calling out commands, "Inside! Outside! 3 to the front! No pack!" I was blown away. These women were not what I expected. Small girls, big girls, some with tattoos, some looking more like models and less like a tough badass. There they were all with big smiles welcoming me into their home. I had to prove myself, I still do, but every practice night I'm there.

For the first time in my life I've walked (skated) into a room and immediately felt like I was where I belonged. Derby isn't just about you. Derby isn't just about finding yourself or your confidence. Derby is about community. The community of girls from all backgrounds and beliefs coming together to do something amazing -- something they genuinly love. I love derby because of the way I feel when I'm on my skates.

I love derby because of the new family I am joining. I love derby because of the intense satisfaction I feel when I hit another person. But mostly, I love derby because of the people I am surrounded by. They amaze me and I am reminded every time I'm sitting in a circle of girls who are strapping on their skates, talking about how smelling their gear is and comparing rink rash how blessed I am to be a part of it. I can't imagine my life without derby." - Bruise Her Blue, Juneau Roller Girls
