Dear new Me,

I am going to make 2012 the best year ever with a few New Year's resolutions that I will actually keep this year.

1.) I will get my sh*t together and organize my life.
2.) I SWEAR I will use protection starting NOW.
3.) I will work out more - more crunches, more stairs, more trail skating. MORE MORE MORE!
4.) I will work on my speed.  Stop...Jammer Time.
5.) I will get a better education.
6.) I will try new things.
7.) I will save money.
8.) I will dress to impress.
10.) I will take better care of myself, because if I don't, who will?

Thanks for listening,
The old Me.

Fangsinmotion

Congratulations to last week's winner of the RollerGirlSkates.com Weekly FREE SH*T CONTEST,
Moloko Violet of Greensboro Roller Derby- Gate City Roller Girls  has won a FREE pair of KP-Pro knee pads, courtesy of Triple 8!

THE CONTEST: "As a vet, what's the one best piece of advice would you give to a Fresh Meat skater?"

THE WINNING ENTRY: Although most of the entries stressed the importance of good knee pads from the moment you start derby (which is AMAZING advice),
we found that Moloko Violet's submission really spoke to us;

"Everyone wants to emphasize the heart of derby: the community, the love, the friendship, and the way this all becomes part of an addiction-- and addiction with a penchant to be dolled up in stretchy-bright-things. It's true, and I miss these things as I sit thousands of miles away from my league, going mad with the desire to be back on 8 wheels and in weird outfits with them... but you'll figure all of that out in no time. It's obvious. As a veteran, I have more important advice:

Treat it like a sport, compete every day, and focus on getting strong.

You like the silly socks? The crazy events? The loud music? Can't wait to paint-up your face and see posters with your clever name all over them? Yeah, me too! But we can only keep this thing going with a hefty dose of true athleticism and real talent. Let's be real: if we are going to keep the crazy clothes and rebel attitude, we are going to have to work harder to show that we play a real sport. And I'm okay with that, because I get to work harder and still wear Blade Runner's Priss' make-up while I play my sport.

They may come to watch bunch of loud fools clumsily galloping around, in minimal clothing, occasionally running into each other. But they won't respect it and they won't come back again and buy your merch. What I and the fans that respect roller derby want to see is a bunch of loud SUPER HEROES (often in minimal clothing) on that track! Get stable, be strong, go faster, and encourage your teammates to do the same. Derby is there for women that have never played sports before in their lives and for women of all sizes, but it is only a matter of time before we're all on the same page: a rolling army of muscle-y awesome. And it's that tougher, healthier you that really pays off. Ask yourself at practice: Would I pick myself to be in the front wall of the final jam?

So that's my line. Don't worry about the tights, the theatrics or the after-party when you're at practice. That totally great stuff just comes naturally.
Sweat first. That's why you came here, anyway, right?"

-Moloko Violet

Thanks, Moloko.  We couldn't have said it better ourselves.

Congratulations to this week's winner of the RollerGirlSkates.com Weekly FREE SH*T CONTEST!

Bruise Her Blue of the Juneau Roller Girls! She won a FREE set of Radar Tile Biters!

THE CONTEST:
"You talk about it all the time.  You live, breath, think and eat it.
You daydream about it and sneak forbidden peeks of websites about it at work.
Your life has been turned upside down and inside out because of it.
Yeah, we know....you love roller derby, but what RollerGirlSkates.com wants to hear is WHY."

THE WINNING SUBMISSION:
"My whole life I've made up for my short comings with humor. I grew up being the short fat funny girl who made everyone laugh. I joined the volley ball team in high school but never really managed to do much but get hit by the ball instead of hit the ball. I joined softball for our city parks and rec team but always seemed to trip when rounding the bases or strike out at slow pitch...thats right, slow pitch softball. Then, while sitting on my couch watching the movie Whip It I was introduced to a sport I never new exsisted. I was speechless. "Too bad Juneau, AK doesn't have roller derby" I thought to myself.

Fast forward 6 months and I'm watching the Juneau Roller Girls skate past me in our fourth of July parade. I said to myself silently, "I have to do this." So, some months later there I was, standing awkwardly on my Reidell skates with my pads, mouth guard and helmet to cover my giant dome head. All I could think was how I was crazy. I could hardly skate! But one thing that never changed was I knew for the first time ever I had found my sport. I watched the Juneau Roller Girls fly past me calling out commands, "Inside! Outside! 3 to the front! No pack!" I was blown away. These women were not what I expected. Small girls, big girls, some with tattoos, some looking more like models and less like a tough badass. There they were all with big smiles welcoming me into their home. I had to prove myself, I still do, but every practice night I'm there.

For the first time in my life I've walked (skated) into a room and immediately felt like I was where I belonged. Derby isn't just about you. Derby isn't just about finding yourself or your confidence. Derby is about community. The community of girls from all backgrounds and beliefs coming together to do something amazing -- something they genuinly love. I love derby because of the way I feel when I'm on my skates.

I love derby because of the new family I am joining. I love derby because of the intense satisfaction I feel when I hit another person. But mostly, I love derby because of the people I am surrounded by. They amaze me and I am reminded every time I'm sitting in a circle of girls who are strapping on their skates, talking about how smelling their gear is and comparing rink rash how blessed I am to be a part of it. I can't imagine my life without derby." - Bruise Her Blue, Juneau Roller Girls

“My whole life I've made up for my short comings with humor. I grew up being the short fat funny girl who made everyone laugh. I can't imagine my life without derby.”

SUBMISSION B:

"In less than 6 years roller derby has given me what countless therapists never could. Roller Derby gave me the confidence to not only be who I am but to embrace and love that person. Roller Derby gave me the security to not only come out of the closet with a bang but to be a part of and eventually help run  "The Vagine Regime" an organization that lets me help other girls the same way my league mates helped me. I recently transferred to another league after over 5 years with my league and couldn't believe how easily accepted I was. I think I felt like the “new guy” for 2 practices tops. The positive energy and easily forged friendships among woman is a modern miracle to someone who has always been "one of the guys". So what is it I love about Roller Derby? The shiny shorts of course ;)"

SUBMISSION C:

"Okay okay..so aside from stating the obvious- “what is there not to love about roller derby?” and “who doesn’t love roller derby?” there a lots of reasons I love roller derby. Not just love roller derby- but looooooooove derby.

I never did sports when I was in school. At 5’11’’ I should have been all about basketball, or volleyball or something. I tried volleyball, and it was fun, but just not enough. I tried basketball and skipped practices to hang out with my friends. It was a no go. I’ve always been a bit of a loner, and so teamwork was often a foreign idea to me.

Skip ahead several years later. A friend of a friend told me she was learning to skate for roller derby.  Did I want to learn too? “Uh- hell yes!” I went and bought skates the next day and a year later I’m still skating with my league.

Why do I love roller derby? Because it gets me off my butt even when I don’t feel like moving. Because there are 20 other girls (and some guys) who notice when I don’t show up to even one practice. Because every time I talk about it I can’t help but laugh a little and smile. Because I feel like a rock star even when I’m standing still. Because I’ve lost 30 lbs since I started and still eat junk every day. Because I never thought I could. Because it’s important and I want other people to fall in love with the sport like I have.

I might not be an awesome skater yet- might even have a long way to go; all I know is that I’m going to keep going. I love derby and I feel somewhere deep deep down- derby loves me too."

SUBMISSION D:

"Roller Derby is not just a sport to me, it’s a family, and It’s an obsession. When I am not skating, I am pulling 18 credit hours at Western Kentucky University. Which, in turn, makes me absolutely bogged down with stress and lack of sleep. Up until 5 months ago when I started fresh meat with my league, I had horrible knee pains, which almost caused me to wash out of boot camp, but I forced my way through it, despite warnings, and cryptic messages from my doctors.

After skilling out, my family decided to move again. (military brat) and I had to spend the summer in Germany, and luckily, I was able to find a roller derby team there to skate with while I was gone. 2 months into roller derby, and 3 weeks after my skill out, my knee pain is completely gone, I have more confidence in every day life, and my personal relationships have improved as now have an outlet for all my stress.

It took skating internationally to see just how big roller derby is, and just how wonderful the skaters I have met, and bout’ed with all come together, even though we didn’t all speak the same language.  It was my first bout, as a visiting skater with a league that made me realize my love for roller derby, and my connection with the roller girls. It made me realize that a touch, push, and sticky skate is the same in every language. Everyone knows that the pack skates together, everyone knows that regardless of your size, height or muscle mass, that you have your position on the track, and that your blockers will help you hold it.

I put my life and every moment I have left in my day-to-day schedule (and then some) into derby, and helping with bout production, and volunteering to teach “fun size” and “snack size” children how to skate to benefit my league.  Regardless of you selecting me to win, I have enjoyed sharing my life’s passion with you."

Congratulations to this week's winner of the RollerGirlSkates.com Weekly FREE SH*T CONTEST (10/10 - 10/15)!

FREEK-A-RELLA of Gold Coast Derby Grrls - nominated by Bear Lee Human

PRIZE: A whole mess of derby apparel! An RGS t-shirt, an Antik t-shirt, a pair of Hex Chromosome Shorts, a pair of Leg Avenue stockings, and a pair of Sock It To Me socks

THE CONTEST:

Do you know a skater who deserves -- I mean REALLY deserves-- some free roller derby apparel? Of course you do, so tell us who they are and why they deserve FREE SH-T so much! Our favorite nominee will receive the stack of super good derby apparel listed below. But don’t worry…there’s something in it for you too! If your nomination is chosen, YOU will receive a $10 gift certificate for RollerGirlSkates.com!

THE WINNING NOMINATION:

"I would like to nominate Freek-A-Rella from the Gold Coast Derby Grrls. Freek has had a really tough time as of late to say the least. She was laid off the morning we left to compete in the South Central Regional’s. To make matters worse her boss not only laid her off, but told the employees that he was not going to pay them any money owed them and they could get a lawyer if they wanted. He owed Freek 3 weeks pay. That was pretty much her rent, groceries, and utilities. This single mom did not let anyone on the team know until we got back because she was afraid it would distract from the task at hand of doing our best at regionals. As you can see from the pics on page 2 she not only hid it well but was a great motivator and source of positive energy. Freek is a very special lady and despite her protests we are chipping in to assist her (cub and I took over paying her phone bill). Skating is the only thing that really gives her joy and an escape from life at the moment and I know winning this prize package would show her that no matter how bad things seem sometime your derby family is always there to help.

P.S. If you pick my entry and Free wins please send her my $10 gift certificate too." - Bear Lee Human, Bench Coach, Gold Coast Derby Grrls

Fri, 16 Sep 2011 14:21:00 -0700 OMFG! Moto Bearings are HERE!!!! http://rgskatesblog.com/omfg-moto-bearings-are-here http://rgskatesblog.com/omfg-moto-bearings-are-here

Moto-half-page-ad

RollerGirlSkates.com is proud to offer the new Moto Bearings by Grn Mnstr, the makers of Gumball Toe Stops and Antik Skates!

Moto Bearings will feature the industry's first and only 'pre-spun' skate bearings, which means there is NO break in period. Moto bearings will skate just as fast on the first day as they would on the twenty-first day. This automated 'pre-spinning' ensures the quality, balance, and integrity of the bearings.

Moto Bearings are lightly oiled and are packaged, sealed, and shipped in a reusable aluminum tube that will keep the bearings clean, lubricated, and damage proof from factory to store shelf.

Moto's aluminum tubes will not soak up the oil and lubrication unlike the normal cardboard packaging that typical bearings come in. Cardboard packing can leave the bearings dry, brittle, and susceptible to damage under skating loads and heat created by high rpm's.

Moto Beatings are available in two models:

Moto Deluxe (stainless steel balls, inners and races, nylon retainers, light oil) - $35

Moto Premium Swiss (Swiss balls, inners and races hardened with 'Ti-Nite' ceramic coating, glass reinforced nylon retainers, lightly oiled) - $89
